Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot released a statement after being grilled by the National Cohesion and Inclusion Commission (NCIC) following his remarks that were described as divisive.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, January 12, the lawmaker explained that his statement had been taken out of context.

Cheruiyot was on the radar after making the remarks at Vice President William Ruto’s rally in Eldoret at which he is heard asking Kesses MP Mishra Swarup to return home.

In his statement, Cheruiyot claimed that he made this statement in a political context, meaning he was asking voters in the constituency to elect the MP in the upcoming polls.

“I have taken the time to explain why I used this name, which even the Honorable Mishra uses when speaking outside his constituency.

“Secondly, I gave more details of what I meant when I said he should go home. When you speak in a Kenyan political space and say a leader should go home, that means simply that he should not be elected to office,” he said.

He further explained that the speech has been used in political circles for years and Ruto and his opponent Raila Odinga have been victimized before and it was not deemed offensive.

“I’m sure many times you have heard those who disagree with William Ruto say he will return to Sugoi while those who disagree with Raila say he will return to Bondo,” he added.

The grilling came a day after Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji ordered investigations into his remarks.

“The alleged words captured in the video clip refer to the racial identity of an elected leader whose words could elicit feelings of contempt, hatred, hostility, violence or discrimination,” reads a statement. press release from the DPP.

Other politicians have been under the radar because of their remarks, including Kitutu Chache MP Richard Onyonka and Meru Senator Mithika Linturi.

Authorities are cracking the whip on errant politicians even as campaigns kick off.
