With a chance to seal the Royal London series, England left no stones unturned in their bid to secure a win in the 2nd ODI in Old Trafford. After the English bowlers did an exemplary job to restrict Ireland to 212/9, it seemed relatively an easy task for the hosts.

However, the neighbours struck as early as the first over, as Young sent Jason Roy back to the hut for a duck. Bairstow in the other end, right from the start looked in a record-breaking mood as he just took on the onslaught on every bowler in the Ireland attack.

Bairstow picked up his half-century in style as well, sending McBrine over the park. In the process, the right-hander entered the record books equalling England’s fastest ODI fifty.

The series is a part of the World Cup super league, implying that it will have more significance now. Each team will play an ODI series against eight of the twelve opponents, four series at home and four away. Each series will consist of three ODIs. For the World Cup, the hosts (India in 2023), and the top seven-ranked sides thereafter, will qualify automatically. The remaining five teams will play in a qualifying event along with five Associate sides, from which two sides will go through to the final tournament.
